Can You Ask For Help?

Hello Reader,

I know for myself it can be hard to ask for help. I have worked in the helping profession all my life and I was always there for others. When it came to myself it has been a different story. Thankfully, I do find it easier now!

This question really hit me when my mom was 91 and she was living on her own. I had offered to help her to downsize many times but she was adamant that she could do it herself and did not need any help. Unfortunately, I did not see any evidence of this and knew it was not going to happen. I really wished I could have helped my mom more in those earlier years.

Eventually, we did get my mom some help in her home with light meals and some cleaning and she was not happy about it at all. She said she would just watch the helper and felt like she “should” be doing this herself. It is so hard to give up that control!

My mom is now 95 and is in a Care Home and doing well.

Is asking for help a Strength or a Weakness?

Most people would likely say it is a strength, however, it can still be hard to do. There are many reasons why it is so hard.

. a worry about being judged

. a feeling of embarrassment or shame

. It could be a waste of time if this doesn’t work

. I have tried a few things and nothing works

. they might not really want to help me or understand what I need

. I “should” be able to do this myself

. there can be this fear of if I start this work it will mean I have to follow through

. I will feel vulnerable

. I do not want to give up control

. they might use it against me at a later date
